Heat pumps

How a heat pump earns its keep up north.

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it. In summer it works like an air conditioner.

In winter it pulls heat out of the outdoor air and brings it inside, which current cold-climate models keep doing well below freezing.

Paired with a gas or propane furnace in a dual-fuel setup, the heat pump handles the mild days and the furnace takes over when it gets truly cold. You get efficient heat most of the season and a proven backup for January.

How we do it

Where the outdoor unit sits matters.

Snow, drifting and ice sliding off a roof can bury or crack an outdoor unit. We set them on raised stands or wall brackets, out from under the drip line, with the line set covered and the defrost water able to drain away.

You can see it in our own job photos: an outdoor unit up on a stand and pad, line set run neatly up the siding in a cover.

Questions

Heat pumps in a Michigan winter.

Still not sure? Call (989) 305-5490 and ask. We’re open 24 hours.

Do heat pumps really work in northern Michigan winters?

Cold-climate models keep producing heat well below freezing. A dual-fuel setup hands the job to your furnace on the coldest nights, so you’re never relying on one system alone.

Will I still need my furnace?

Not always, but in this climate we often recommend keeping it as backup. We walk through both options for your house.

Do heat pumps need maintenance?

Yes. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, change filters, and have it checked once a year so the defrost controls and refrigerant charge stay right.
